That's what I really want. To be technical about it, EVERY camera that supports video with encoding fancier than motion JPEG has a circular buffer in the video pipeline because it is needed for the forward/backward frame differencing compression in MPEG, etc. Unfortunately, those buffers usually hold cropped and scaled YUV frames, not the original raw data. That makes it easier to do the 4K photo mode than to do something similar with raw captures, because there is almost no new code needed using the video pipe.

All in one cameras are convenient, plus gone are the days of just sitting the video camera on a tripod at a wedding and leaving it to record for hours. I can't imagine Panasonic putting a limit on 6K performance, unless local tariff laws require it. If you've ever used a GH4, you know the shape and control layout were designed for comfort and intuitive use. Buttons are right where they should be. You can customize the hell out of it. It just feels right, even for hours of hand-held use. And the menus are the cleanest, most intuitive I've ever used (I used to be a Canon and Nikon user).

Anyways, I have no way of testing this myself as I don’t have a Panasonic camera. I thought you have one to test? I also use Lightroom so it’s not a problem. So let me put my question like this and I’m hoping either you or someone with experience can specifically address this for me. Assuming SD card capacity isn’t an issue, can you shoot a 1:1 video (1 min, 5 min, or 10 min, w/e) in 4K Photo mode. Then transfer the video to my computer.

If I play the video in software like Quicktime, will the video play as a 1:1 video file since I set the aspect ratio to 1:1 (i.e. Similar to Vine or Instagram video)? Then if I want to pull out frames, then I can import it into Lightroom and extract the frame that I want? Larry, here is additional info I’ve received from my contacts at Panasonic about shooting the 4K Photo Mode: -Unlike the normal video mode, in the 4K Photo mode you can select from the list of available aspect ratios 1:1, 3:2, 4:3 or 16.9 -You can set the shutter speed, just as you would with still photography. I typically use shutter priority and use from 1/500 – 1/1000th -I do not use Aperture so I can’t explain how or if it can be done. I use Adobe Lightroom or do it in camera and it is so simple!
